encouraged to be bold, innovative and meticulous in their research.
Because the possibility exists that the fruit of this competition could be an idea or
innovation that could change the course of South African economic history, we offer generous cash prizes.

 

2009 Prizes :

Postgraduate Category
1st Prize: R150 000*
2nd Prize: R60 000
3rd Prize: R25 000

Undergraduate Category
1st Prize: R30 000
2nd Prize: R15 000
3rd Prize: R10 000


* While the R150 000 first prize for postgraduate submissions is a cash prize, it may only be used for educational purposes and the competition organisers require proof that it is being so used. Educational purposes could include paying for further study at a university or technikon, paying off a student loan, or the purchase of books or other study material.

Book Prize Rules

  • Nedbank and Old Mutual will award a R3000.00 book voucher to 1 undergraduate student per higher learning institution.
  • In order to qualify for consideration, a higher learning institution must submit 5 or more entries in the undergaduate category.
  • The prize will be awarded in accordance with the filtering panel process to the overall highest ranking student at each qualifing higher learning institution.
  • The winners will be announced in February 2010.
  • The prize is not tranferable to cash.
